Art in Action

Mrs McLendon

I've been teaching at UMS going on my 23 year. In my time at UMS, I've taught Fine Arts electives as well as Language Arts, and Skills for Living. In addition to teaching in the classroom, I have also serve as Art Club advisor, sharing ideas inspired by a book by Eric M. Scott and David R. Modler, entitled "Journal Junkies". My interest in this class/club started from my own desire to continue drawing. These journals became a "portable life museum", where students sketch, write, doodle their daily experiences, hopes, and dreams. Through art, students gain a tool for life. I'm excited about my own journal!

I grew up in Los Gatos California and studied at Cabrillo College, University of Santa Cruz and Bethany University, graduating with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in English with a minor in Art, and certification for Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). I also received a Masters of Arts in Education from Bethany University. Prior to teaching at Union, I worked as a recruitment coordinator for Bethany's External Degree Program. My heart has always been in education and helping students of all ages to discover their gifts and potential.

I've loved art for as long as I can remember. Sketchbooks from over the years tell my life stories and interests. My other consuming interest is triathlon. I've trained with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training (TNT)eigth seasons (three of these triathlon. This year I completed my sixth Ironman in Santa Rosa, CA. I am also a wife & mom to one teenage son in 8th grade and 16 year old daughter, a junior in high school.

I like to keep busy.  As I share with students, "Art is my place to process and make sense of life". It is my hope that students will also make this connection, not be afraid of taking risks or making "mistakes" but instead see each step as an opportunity for growth and success. In this way art translates far beyond the classroom.

Teaching remotely, especially fine arts, is less than ideal. Last semester, together we learned some best methods for tackling this challenge. I'm certain this year's students will also rise to the occasion as well with their creativity and dedication. I am excited to see what we create together. Now more than ever, students need art!

I try to continuously update this website to include links to each of the art classes and galleries of student work. Simply click on the class in which your child is enrolled for access to the homework calendar, and a copy of our classroom syllabus.

The best way to contact me is via the email address above. I try to respond to messages promptly.
